      *NEW LINK*

Here is a new site if you have tried the others below and they have not worked. It is a search engine to find a toy drive in your area by zip code.

      CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE SEARCH ENGINE

Here is one called SimpleChristmas maybe to help change our ideas about Christmas? I have cut down on the amount of presents that I give after reading pages like this one.

      SIMPLE CHRISTMAS

Try the Salvation Army. My town had a free shopping day with a room you could get free new presents-they gave us a voucher-call your Salvation Army to find out what they have

      SALVATION ARMY CHRISTMAS HELP

How to request a toy at Toys for Tots (NOTE-click find a local campain office  in the side bar at the left , then click find an office, then use the scroll down feature to find your state.  This will give you the information to contact the local coordinator in your area.)

      TOYS FOR TOTS

Here is another page with ideas that are very low or no cost.

      NO COST CHRISTMAS

Try your local freecycle group. Here is the national site with links to local sites. It is amazing what you can find.

      FREECYCLE

Christmas with no or little money. I typed this in at a forum at this site , and got tons of pages of stuff , so you can sift through and find what you want to use.

      NO MONEY CHRISTMAS

This is the Christmas page from the AllThingsFrugal site. Just put your blinders on for all the ads they have , and you will find some good stuff.

ALL THINGS FRUGAL CHRISTMAS AND GIFTS

The Fraternal Order of Police have a wonderful program called  SHOP WITH A COP. In order to find out about it , you need to contact the local lodge of the FOP in your town. Not all the lodges take part in the program. This is worth doing some homework to find it in your area.

Here is some stuff you can do without money  This stuff is free, or made with items you can get with food stamps:

Make a popcorn Garland Or one from those fruit flavored cereals(the 'loop' kind)

Watch Christmas shows together with hot chocolate(stir with candy canes) and popcorn and show on tv is free. If you don’t have a tv-walk to free activities in churches or museums or libraries. My daughter and I did ,and we had great conversations walking together that we would not have had if we stayed home and moped around.

      Make a snowman

      Have a snowball fight

Make a ginger bread house out of graham crackers and what ever you have in the house Make cement from powdered sugar and water. It is cheaper than store bought icing.

      GRAHAM CRACKER HOUSES

Paint Christmassy pictures on the windows with washable paint Add a little dish soap to make it come off easier.

Make a game out of hunting around the house, for things to make Christmas decorations . Let the stuff kids find be good memories even if it is “silly” to you.

Here are some really nice ornaments to make about the true meaning of Christmas. You can make them from paper and markers/crayons OR fabice/felt. Whatever you have .

      CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

Go caroling or just sing Christmas carols at home. Singing can make you feel better !

Page 2 has free Christmas Carol sheet music to print out !

      PAGE 2 CHRISTMAS

Attend a live Nativity –churches have free ones. Some are outside , so if you live in a cold climate , dress warmly !

Go collect pine cones and use them to make ornaments

TIP :   First bake the cones on a foil-lined cookie sheet for about  an hour at  200 degrees. This kills any bugs or spider mites(or who knows what else !) that live in them. This also allows the seeds to fall out. If you want the pine cone to close up again , just plunge it in cold water.

      PINE CONE CRAFTS

Have the kids write and act out a Christmas play

Rent videos from the library and have a movie marathon. Stay up all night if you want !

Have a game night –you sometimes borrow these at the library too. Or invite other single mom families and tell them to bring what games they have.

Here are some games to print out ! ! !

      PRINTABLE GAMES

Shovel the snow for your elderly neighbors –No matter how little you have , you always
have something you can give to others who have less.

Read one Christmas short story each night before bed –make some up too. Get books out of the library early. People tend to snatch them up at the last minute.

Have a birthday celebration for Jesus. Tell Him what you will give Him for His birthday this year.

Light up your sidewalk with luminaries !

take labels off cans of veggies or fruit. Punch holes in cans in any shape. (mom do this with screw driver or other tools). Don’t punch all the way to the bottom of the cans. Fill with sand or dirt to level below punched holes. Stick old candles in light . Put outside at night . They are so pretty. Here is another icy light to make for free :

      ICE LIGHT

Learn about different cultures celebrate Christmas.... and about what they did years ago(library).

This link has a book list for Christmas. Scroll down for the books about different countries. If your library doesn't have the book you want ask for inter-library loan.

Make a manger scene out of playdough( Play  dough type recipe follows) or clay or even construction paperor blocks or sticks from outside(I bet the original one was made out of stones and logs and dirt), whatever is handy

      Make paper snowflakes

.  The simplest, yet most beautiful holiday decoration? Paper snowflakes! Re-live your childhood and create a few. Or a whole blizzard. If you're feeling generous, you can ask your kids to help. When you're done, tape them on your windows- whenever you look out, you'll see a white Christmas. The snowflakes also look really good made into a wreath.

       More Christmas ideas and thoughts from   W H O ~ K N E W (an aidmate!)

I was reading your posts about Christmas and I remember we used to take the dough recipe (you posted) along cookie cutter and make ornaments. Roll the dough out to about ¼ in thick. Cut out different shapes with cookie cutters – holiday shapes, or even a simple round cup can be used. Remember to cut a small hole at the top to put yarn through! Let them dry overnight and then paint or decorate with glue and sparkles or other decorations. Hang on tree and enjoy your homemade Christmas tree!

Another decoration that NEVER goes out of style is the paper chains. Cut colorful strips of construction paper about ¼ wide and 2inches long. Glue the ends together, take another strip, loop it through the first and glue together. Great for stringing over doorways or using as garland on the tree! If you do not have colored construction paper, us plain white paper and color the strips before gluing together. Not only does it look beautiful, but it is a great way to spend time together. just a thought...

MAKE DOLL FOODS ( CUTE !)

And here is a clay you can make and use for the doll foods :

      Homemade Cornstarch Clay

Clay to use for play or make  doll food , ornaments and sculptures.

      Large saucepan
      2 cups baking soda
      1 cup cornstarch
      1 cup water
      Paints and brushes (optional)

Stir the cornstarch, baking soda and water together in the saucepan thoroughly and bring to a boil on medium to medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Turn off the heat and continue stirring until the mixture is the texture of mashed potatoes, then cover and cool to room temperature.

The clay is now ready for play! Use it for play or make ornaments and sculptures.

      Dry your clay
Allow the clay to air dry, turning the piece over every 12 hours. If your oven is capable of baking at less than 200 degrees Fahrenheit, you may choose that option, though the ornaments will be more brittle.

You can make ornaments too :

Roll out 1/8- to ¼-inch-thick slabs of clay. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters or children’s play knives. Poke holes large enough to thread a ribbon or fishing line through, using a pencil or other object. Use watercolors or other paint after it dries.

Combine sugar and syrup and boil for 1 minute. Do not stir. Add Jello and mix, pour over popcorn and mix well. Add sprinkles if desired. Then grease hands with butter and make into balls. Make sure popcorn is cool, but not too cool.

      +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

      ALL PURPOSE PLAY  DOUGH    CLAY
This play dough clay is scented and colored.

      1 cup flour
      ½ cup salt
      1 pack unsweetened drink mix
      1 tablespoon oil
      1 cup boiling water

Mix dry ingredients in a large saucepan . Stir is oil and water . Stir over medium heat until it forms a ball , Dump on wax paper or tabletop allow to cool a little, then knead until smooth. If you have glitter , add it for a special look ! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I wanted to include this , but I didn't know where to put it. It is dessert sushi , and it would be fun to make as a family or with friends. I think it may be a hit with the older kids !

      SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

YOU ARE THE ONE WHO SETS THE TONE FOR  THE HOLIDAYS  AND THE  HOLIDAY CHEER IN YOUR HOUSE. IF YOU ACT LIKE IT IS A HORRIBLE HOLIDAY, YOUR KIDS WILL TOO.
SO , TRY TO FIND THE THINGS YOU CAN BE JOYFUL ABOUT THIS TIME OF YEAR. START WITH SMALL STUFF THEN BUILD UP TO BIGGER THINGS TO BE JOYFUL ABOUT.
YOUR KIDS WILL LEARN THE DEEPER THINGS THIS WAY. BEFORE YOU KNOW IT , YOU WILL HAVE A DIFFERENT TRADITION STARTED. ONE ABOUT BEING HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU DO HAVE.

You know I like what you said that we're the ones who set the tone for the holidays. We've never had a lot of money to spend on gifts, I feel bad for my kids when they have to go to school and here all the gifts everyone else has gotten. But no matter how little we have we do what we can for others. I used to work at a nursing home and I had to work Christmas a few times and it was very sad for me to see that a lot of the residents family never came to see them and after the first time I seen this the next year we made everyone a little gift and we dressed up in our holiday best and spent the day with the residents. We do this every year now, and my kids look forward to it. I've always taught them it's better to give from your heart then your wallet.

I also wanted to add when we first bought our fake Christmas tree 10 yrs ago we couldn't afford ornaments. I decided every year my kids would make something special for the tree. Until they could write I would write on an ornament shaped piece of paper what I loved about my children or what is special about them, now every year we all write something special about eachother and afterward I take my packing tape and put over it and we hang them on the tree. I love my tree because it's a symbol of my family.

Being far from home can be a challenge. As you settle down and meet more people , I pray that you are enveloped with warmth and love.

        Hi ginnybell,

Thank you for sharing your wonderful way of looking at life with us. Living each moment to the fullest is SO IMPORTANT ! I have heard that all my life , and not until I lost most of my ability to get around and enjoy life without being in pain or having mobility problems did I understand . My God and my daughter are the most important things in my life. Thank God I still have both. That is all I need. The rest can fall by the wayside.

Please , anyone who has anything good in your lives , be thankful for what you do have and don't always be searching for more. Appreciate life and all the beauty around you . If you had a meal today , be thankful . There are those who haven't eaten for days. If you have more than one set of clothes , you are rich according to some people in Third World countries. Do you have a car ? You are Blessed beyond measure. Is everyone healthy in your family ? You have riches . Can you read? A world of amazing things is open to you. Can you walk without pain ? I have a friend without a leg. who would love that gift.

If you are searching for more this Christmas , look at what gifts you already have in your life. Celebrate family ,food ,warmth , water you can drink without getting sick , a roof over your head , clothes , shoes , books , music , a helping hand . Christmas is a time for thankfulness and giving ,and yes , sometimes recieving . All of these things are wonderful and full of joy , but please also know that you are already blessed . All  of us have at least one thing to be thankful for . If you don't know what it is , start searching your life and thank God for that one thing. You will be amazed at how your attitude will change . A small spark of joy and thankfulness will start .Before you know it , you will have a brightly glowing flame .Cherish  life.

My 12 year old son has been through so much pain this last year.  His grandmother commited suicide last September, his dad died in March, and the Dr.s found a large tumer in my brain.  I have had major surgery and 6 weeks of radiation and am happy to say Im a survior.  This Christmas I cant afford to get Christmas presents because I am disabled and still paying off funeral bills from my husband.  My son is very smart and came to me the other day.  He told me not to worry because having me was all he needed this Christmas.  I agree with that!  Being here with him is my gift.  He is always thinking of everyone else.  I would love to get him presents but when it comes down to it what matters is our family.  Hold them close, make up with them if your not getting along.  There isn't anything more important than loving and being loved.  God has blessed us in this saddness.  Remember it could always be worse, what you think is important may not  be, and what you think is unimportant may be the most important.  Live everyday like its your last.  God will provide for us in some way I just know it.  Happy Holidays!!!

I read your post and i see the scam artists right here in my town.

And ill tell you that if you go to food bank here ,the workers think everyone is a scam artist.

I recently lost my job i work part time looking for full time work, and i had to go to food bank, sign up for toys for tots and apply for welfare benfits, its degrading. Those workers deal with so many who really dont need help that they are standoffish to those who do.

I have 3 shut off notices, close to be evicted, losing my car scrounge for gas money, its unreal, and to ask for help and to know that you are going to be treated that way makes it much worse.

But on the happy note it also makes you want to do more to get rid of needing that help.

I hope all can find help that need it,it is truly hard to get help anymore,i have 3 boys and i find it hard just to keep food on the table, but i manage and hopefully all that read this can get help and someday will be able to help someone else in trouble.

Just remember everyone unless they were born rich has been where you are now or close to it or much worse,so even an encouragement or kind word is a big help.

If you live in butler county,pa the toys for tot program is only taking kids for few more days their number is 724-865-9852

And ive heard that st vincents food bank is the better one to join.

If i find anything else that helps ill post it.

Hello everyone whos in need this year! i understand fully what your going through as i have been there! not only now as a new father but also when i was a child it was tough! i really hope you all find help and peace this year! but please when you do find a company or somone/somthing simalar to help, please have all doucumentation and througho proof to provide about your desprite situation upon request, many if not all of these companys and independent good people will requrie some proof and doucumentation about how serious and in need you really are!!! i know its hard to believe but there are people who in my opioion are very "sick" and "evil"!! they come on to sites such as this looking for good harted people to give money and gifts when really they are actually doing fine! they are trying to "steal" and decieve who ever they can to take free money and/or gifts for there own use! even if they may not be rich so to speak some people who ask for things dont really need it they could be fine on there own but they are greedy and decitful trying to "rob" and use good honest kind hearted people for there own benifits! i know its hard to believe that there could be such sick evil mothers and fathers, men, and women who lie about the sevarity or actuall neededy ness of there situation only to gain and take what ever they can get there hands on! but it happends alot more then you may think! i now voullinteer at the salvation army(where by the way any body whos in need for anything should visit especially during christmas! they will help with gifts for kids and food!)but you will need to have proof that your in need and not "abusing" so to speak there great frindly orginasation! to recieve gifts! this proof could be very simple such as a "social assitance stattment" also known as "welfare" statment just stating your monthly income and other things such as this!i.e.. eletric bills, other bills with some form of id for you and your children! but other then that i would incourage everyone who is in need to get in touch with the local salvation army in your neighbourhood they helped me and many of my friends give there children a happy plentyful christmas! so if your a mother or father in need this yera check out the local salvation army and please try to avoid asking for cash from strangers on these types of sites not because all of you are theifs but its a sad common fact that out of every 8 request for cash/gifts from independent people i.e.. a good hearted man/women, whos not connected with a falculty such as or close to the salvation army out of every 8 request from people, more then likly 1 or 2 of those 8 people are frauds who may not even have children at all or maybe they have children but really arent in the desprite need that they make it out to sound like! please if your thinking of sending money to a family stating there in desprite need DO NOT, ever just send money to any one no matter what there story is! if there asking for money rather then food, or help centers in there area it most likly is a scam!please actually NEVER EVER send money to ANYONE regardless of there situation as they may "claim" it to be so bad, the truth is you just dont know who is asking for that money from there computer? especially if anyone says please send money through paypal or another simalar direct money transfer system! if they are in serious need of help please refer them to a local emergency help center, or welfare center! there honestly is no reason for ANYONE to be asking for cash on the interenet regardless of there situation! if they are in such desprite need for= food, gifts or money for bills, they can call a local salvation army, welfare and or simalar office whos goal is to help people who may be facing eviction, lights getting turned out, no food,no gifts, there is always a center to help familys with children regardless of there childs age or health! there is always more then enough adaquite help for people who are less fortinate! there is NO NEED for anyone (mothers,fathers,caregivers,etc....) to be asking tottal strangers for "cash" or really even "gifts" if you need these things such as cash and or gifts, help paying bills please dont ask people to deposit money into your bank account or paypal account without even meeting with and or providing valid proof that you are in real need this just leaves to much chance for fraud and what i call "evil" "selfish" people who have ruined the chance for honest good trust worthy people to recieve the help they need to lie and decieve people into depositing money into there account for there own lavish spending needs! so again NEVER EVER no matter what the fancy sad story may be weather true or false send money to familys or people in need on the net the best most helpful thing you could do to help is maybe if you have determined they are %100 honest and have provided enough proof that they are in serious need maybe send a non refunable food card i.e (food gift card) that can not be changed for cash! or send second hand clothes, or toys you are no longer using to them aswell if you are in there area you could drop of caned food and/or other food items! and the other most helpful thing anyone can do for someone in need is help direct them to a emergincy help center such as welfare, salvation army, and/or any service simalar to these which only goal is to help provide food, clothes, gifts and not only this they offer life building skills and money management, counciling and other skills on a ongoing basis to try and prevent this from happening to them in the future! dont you think giving the skills and education to change, would be much more effective then "bandageing the problem for a short while, only to have the same familly in need the years to come!" by giving money and new toys is fine but wont help them to learn life skills, or get full one on one or familly counciling and build a long lasting relationship with a counciller who can always help any time of the year weather it be help paying bills, food, getting gifts for christmas! or even just someone to talk to when you need a helping hand and someone to listen maybe give advice! think of it the best most responsible thing you could do to help would be to direct them to a center that could provide help now and for the years to come! in much more ways then just giving money or toys! think about it always say to someone in need the best thing i can do for you and your family is not give you money and toys but help you get in touch with a counciller, who can help you with ANY problem you may have weather it be financial, emotional, and or physical! so again NEVER EVER GIVE money or toys over the internet, instead give the gift of life or maybe a non refundable food voucher for a grocerystore, some toys your children dont use anymore or if you live in the same area you can meet with that particular familiy and bring food to there house such as caned food and/or frozen, fresh meat and vegitibles!and judge using your own descretion weather they are in real need of fianancial help! but other then these great tips please do not EVER, EVER, give money, and or brand new toys only give toys if you are %100 sure they are in need, such as if you live in the area you could meet with them or something along those lines!and see, but PLEASE DONT EVER SEND MONEY NO MATTER WHAT THE STORY IS OVER THE NET, there are just to many theifes looking for a quick buck and some will go very far with elabrite sad, sad stories "schemes"such as death in the family, bad health of themself or baby, no home to live in,handicaped children! the list goes on and on as im sure you could imagine, they will say whatever they can think of that may make an honest hard working man/women feel sorry or sad and give as much as they can to get what ever they can such as cash, brand new toys, and things along those lines! if someone is in desprite need for help they will be more then greatful for some advice, food, and or used toys! if you offer something such as food voucher, used toys, and or advice but they say or make a story about how they need cash only DO NOT go with it! if they arent more then excited with a donation of a non refunable food voutcher, used gift, and or valuble advice of where to go for great help then you no they arent in as bad a state as they are claming! just use common sense when helping others! its really sad but in the world we live in today its hard to trust! especially when it comes to giving money to stranges or new gifts! you just dont know anymore!give them the best gift this holiyday season! the gift of knowledge! tell them to visit there local salvation army, and or welfare office to get all the help and more then they need! not to mention all free and helpful counciling and direction! and god bless all you mother and fathers who are truly in a hard spot this year! i hope you go to a salvation army, welfare office or call your local operator and ask for the type of help your looking for theres always help out there if you look! more then just asking for money or new toys! im sure you will agree if your in real need anything someone can offer will be greatly excepted i.e... food vouchers,new/used toys, food in general, and or advice or help to find local offices to help with christmas and/or any other help weather it be in the winter or summer, you have no childre or 8 it doesnt matter theres always help out there! please refrane from asking for "cash" be deposited in to a bank or paypal account! theres just to many scammers out there and because of this people should never ever send any amount of money to anyone for anything regardless of there story! true or other wise! and remember ive been there and still use those sevices myself! im not one of those ignorant people who had every thing handed to them on a sliver platter and now im trying to talk about a situation i no nothing about from personall experence, such as those many polititions and govenment who talk about things they really dont understand or have never been through it themselfs! thats much easier to talk about and make descions about things based on loose knowledge! where as i have been right where you are and know excatilly first hand how it feels and the negitive stigma attached along with going through those hard stressful times! especially the holliday seasons!! Thanks again guys for listing and understanding that although there are a lot of true honest, familiys in desprite need theres just as many people who are doing it for the money when in fact there really are doing more then fine all by them self!

Not been on Aidpage too long but certain folks have caught my attention. You are one SoulLight. In this world, there are angels. This always reaffirm my faith. I just have to say thank you too. Hope is what we need and hope is what you offer. Keep up the gracious work. God forever bless you, Rebecca
